“(Y/N), when’s your date going to be here?”

This was about the twelfth time your Mother asked you this question in the past hour alone.

“In a few minutes, Mom…” you replied patiently, putting on the last of your prom outfit.

“Well, okay. I just want to know so we have time for some pictures.” your Mom said, before smiling at your formal wear. “Look at you, (Y/N). I can’t get over how great you look in that rental! It suits you perfectly!”

“Be sure not to spill anything on it.” Your Dad said, leaning against your doorframe. “If you do, it’s coming out of your college fund.”

You decided to go with something that was fairly color neutral, with only one bright red rose pinned to your chest. Ruby was naturally red after all, there was a good chance she would be in a red dress.

“I think they’re here!” your Mom exclaimed. You poked your head out of your bedroom window, and sure enough, there was the van pulling up.

As your Mom went to grab her phone, you and your Dad went into the driveway to greet the others. Steven hopped out of the passenger seat and practically sprinted to greet the two of you. He was dressed in a small tuxedo with an emerald green vest and a lighter green bowtie.

“Hey, (Y/N). Hi (Y/N)’s Dad!” he cried. “How do I look?”

Your Dad elbowed you, smirking. “Ruby looks a bit different than I expected.”

Steven slouched, frowning. “C’mon, Mr. (Y/SN), it took a long time to pick this out!”

“He’s kidding, you look great, Steven.” You said, giving him an approving thumbs-up. “Where’re the others?”

“They’ll be out in a little bit, they’re…” he thought for a second. “They’re getting ready!”

Your Mom was following right behind you, and beamed at Steven.

“Hi, you must be Steven! We’ve been hearing about you for so long. Look at that tuxedo, you look great!”

Steven blushed and sheepishly kicked at the driveway. “Aw, thanks… pink is more my color, so I decided on something a little different this time!”

“Well, I think you look adorable, now I-” There was a moment’s pause. “(Y/N), is she your date?”
Sapphire stepped out of the van, wearing her same ballroom dress, only this time with a small set of earrings on and with her hair tied into a tight bun. Her bangs still hung in front of her eye, however.

“No, that’s Sapphire. Steven’s date.” You said, waving hello. Sapphire gave a short finger wave before turning back to the open door.

“Do you need help getting down?” she asked

“N-No… well, yeah.” came a familiar voice from inside.

Sapphire reached inside and took Ruby’s hand, helping her out of the vehicle. Ruby’s simple casual
attire had been exchanged with a just-as-simple red dress, conservatively cut at her neckline and hanging just low enough to hide her ankles. She didn’t wear her headband, and overall seemed a little vexed with what she had to wear.

“Mom, Dad, meet Ruby.” You said.

Your Mom beamed, immediately hurrying over to meet your date. “Hi! (Y/N)’s told me all about you, how are you?”

It took a moment for Ruby to back out of a slightly defensive stance, but she composed herself and extended her hand rigidly.

“Hello. I’m fine.” She said, shaking your Mom’s hand.

Your Dad smiled ruefully, giving a simple hello and shaking Ruby’s hand as well. He decided to keep his greeting less enthusiastic to spare the obviously shy Gem some hassle. Your Mom wasn’t nearly as merciful, and soon had everybody shuffled into a particularly photogenic part of the front yard for a picture.

“Come on, kids, act like you like each other!” your Mom implored. You and Ruby looked at each other.

“You can put an arm around me, it’s cool.” Ruby said, managing a very shy smile.

Since Ruby was so small, it was a bit difficult to put an arm all the way around her without bending your knees. You settled for simply placing your open palm on her shoulder.

That pose didn’t last too long, as her skin felt like resting your hand on a hot stove.

“Alright, everybody smile!” your Mom said.

Everyone smiled. Steven gave his all, Ruby managed what could best be described as a lip spasm, and Sapphire succeeded in a small, but pleasant smile.

It took another few minutes to finally separate yourself from your parents, as your Mom found it pertinent to list off a few guidelines.

“Remember, drive safely. You don’t know how some of your friends might have “prepared” for prom. Try your hardest not to spill anything on your rental, and please, stay as long as you want! This is your night, sweetie!” And with that, your Mom kissed you on the forehead and let you go.

Your Dad simply gave you a hug and said “Don’t do anything stupid. Have fun.”

You climbed into the car, you and Ruby sat in the back while Steven and Sapphire took the front. You couldn’t help but wonder how Sapphire could drive the van, as she seemed a bit too short to reach the pedals, but she seemed to manage fine.

“Your parents are very nice.” Sapphire said as she backed out of your driveway.

“You guys were good sports, thanks for putting up with them.” You replied.

“Nonsense.” Sapphire said. “I hope you don’t mind if we make a short stop at the Temple. Pearl wants a picture with us too.”

You agreed, noticing Ruby uncomfortably scratching at the straps of her dress.

“I knew you’d look good in that.” You said, trying to make her feel better about wearing it.

The only reply you needed was a pointed glare.

“That reminds me…” Sapphire said, not having to take her eye off the road. “Ruby wants to know if she could change into something more comfortable for prom.”

You blinked, looking at Ruby, who softened her expression a little.

“Absolutely, sure.” You said. What kind of person would force their date to be uncomfortable? “What sort of outfit were you-”

You didn’t finish your question before there was a flash of light. Ruby’s dress had been replaced with a tuxedo very similar to Steven’s, minus the added green flair. In fact, the only color on the outfit was a red rose pinned to her lapel, much like yours. In place of dress shoes were small leather black boots, and her headband had reappeared as well.

“Much better…” Ruby said, relaxing against the seat. “Thanks, (Y/N).”

You pulled up at the Temple in no time, and Pearl and Amethyst were already waiting outside on the porch.

“You all look fantastic!” Pearl chirped, her voice unusually lilting.

“I like the monkey suit, R-Spice.” Amethyst said, giving an approving thumbs up to Ruby’s change of clothes.

“Alright, everyone get together!” Pearl had a digital camera ready.

“Déjà vu…” you muttered to Steven, who snickered.

One substantially less awkward picture later, your posse of four was finally ready to go to the dance. Pearl took a moment to straighten up Steven’s outfit and wish him a good time, while Amethyst called you over.

“Take these.” She said, handing you a pair of sunglasses.

“What for?” you laughed.

“I dunno. Blocking out the haters?” She said.

You laughed, giving Amethyst a hug before you all piled back into van.

“Have a great night, everyone!” Pearl called out.

“Do everything Pearl wouldn’t do!” Amethyst chimed in, pointing to the taller Gem now glaring at her.

On the ride to the gym, Ruby asked a question.

“Hey, could I borrow those, please?” She pointed to the shades you still held in your hand.

“These? Um, sure.” You handed Ruby the glasses, which she examined briefly before putting them on.

“How do I look?” she muttered, scratching the back of her head.

“Like a tiny, red James Bond.” You replied truthfully. Ruby snorted and giggled for a few seconds, the glasses sliding down her nose.

It seemed like Ruby had decided to keep the shades on as the van pulled into the campus parking lot. It was almost completely packed, and thankfully you all managed to find a spot that your bulky ride could fit into without scratching any other cars.

“Well… here we are!” Sapphire declared after she cut off the ignition.

You and Ruby exited on opposite sides of the van, the red Gem not having any trouble getting out of the van that time.

“We have to go to the gym lobby at the bottom of those stairs.” You said.

“Sounds good.” Ruby said, holding out her hand. It may have been how sudden it was, but it took you a
second to react.

“Oh-oh sorry!” you stammered, taking Ruby’s outstretched hand. Her hand wasn’t nearly as hot as her shoulder had been a half an hour ago. She must have only gained heat whenever she was flustered or upset.

As the four of you reached the landing of the stairs, you felt Ruby’s hand grow a few degrees warmer. The entrance to the gym was full of sharply dressed teens. One familiar face, a friend of yours from Pre-Calculus, gave a hearty wave.

“Hey, (Y/N), you made it!” he exclaimed, coming over. “They got a student of ours DJing!” He then noticed your date at your elbow, clutching your hand and surveying the other kids behind a pair of
sunglasses.

“This is Ruby! Oh, and that’s Sapphire and Steven.” You gestured to the pair behind you, who were warranting a few more confused stares from your classmates. “They’re my friends from… uh… town.” Ruby
only gave a small nod to your friend.

You suddenly became acutely aware of just how many eyes were on you. Some people looked once or twice more than they might have meant to, only to go back to what they were doing, others stared at Ruby or Sapphire with keen interest. You also noticed a gaggle of girls who appeared to be snickering at Ruby’s outfit. You ignored them.

Your friend ushered you inside, Sapphire having to pull Steven away from a chat he was having with a few guys from the baseball team. As you entered the gym lobby, you felt the pulsing rhythm of Rihanna’s “Disturbia” coming out of the gym subwoofers.

“I gotta go catch up with the other guys, see you on the dance floor!” your friend said before heading into the gym.

“Wow… so there is such a thing as a chocolate fountain!” Steven grew starry eyed as he looked at the refreshment table. And indeed, there was a chocolate fountain in the center, surrounded by all sorts of things to dip into it. He immediately gave you a pleading look.

“Go nuts.” You said. Steven beamed and made a mad dash for it. You turned your attention to Ruby and Sapphire. “So, what do you guys want to do?”

“What do you recommend, (Y/N)?” Sapphire asked. “Rather, what would you like to do?”

“Wanna go dance?” you asked.

“Not yet.” Ruby answered almost automatically. “You can if you want… but I think I need to wait a little while…”

You smiled, letting go of Ruby’s hand. “It’s alright. I get that you’re a little nervous. We can just hang out in here if you want.”

“No, (Y/N),” Sapphire said. “If you want to dance with your friends, you can go ahead. We can manage on our own. We’re big girls.” She added with a small smile.

“Yeah right…” an unfamiliar voice said. All three of you turned to see one of the girls by the door looking in the other direction.

“What’d you say?” Ruby demanded, her voice suddenly devoid of any shyness.

The girl turned to look at her. “Hm? Oh nothing, I wasn’t talking to you.” She said.

“Then who were you talking to?” Ruby pointed to the area around the girl, which indeed had no people in it.

The girl looked around, blinking and pausing for a moment as if trying to find her words, then her face contorted into a frown.

“Are you accusing me of something?” she snapped.

“Yeah, I am!” Ruby shot back. You noticed a barely visible plume of vapor rising off of Ruby’s hair.

Sapphire was at her side immediately.

“Ruby. Let it go.” She said.

The girl scoffed, putting her hands on her hips.

“Aren’t you a little young to be picking a fight with me?” she said.

Ruby balled up both of her fists and bared her teeth, steam now very clearly radiating off of her body.

“Young, huh?! I’ll show you young!” Ruby had to be restrained by Sapphire as she made a move towards the snooty girl.

“Ruby, Ruby! Don’t do this.” Sapphire implored, her voice no louder than before but heaps more intense.

The girl rolled her eyes and walked off.

“Yeah, you better run…” Ruby growled, Sapphire relaxing her grip on her forearm. “You heard what she said, right?”

“I did. But you can’t lose your temper like that. Remember how much stronger you are than a human adolescent, you could really hurt someone.” Sapphire turned to look at you. “(Y/N), this won’t happen again.”

Ruby took a few deep breaths before the steam around her dispersed, and she glanced up at you before setting her sights on the floor.

“I’m… I’m sorry. I can lose my temper sometimes.” She muttered.

“Hey, it’s okay. She was being really mean.” You said. “You need to go cool down some?”

“No…” the small red gem said. “But hey… dancing sounds pretty fun right about now!” She finished with a small smile.

“Are you sure?” you said.

“Positive! Let’s go!” Ruby promptly grabbed your hand and pulled you into the gym. Her hand was blistering hot.

“Steven…” Sapphire beckoned over Steven, who had already eaten two chocolate covered strawberries and a marshmallow, and had chocolate smeared on his mouth.

“Coming!” he hopped down from his stool and grabbed Sapphire’s hand. “I think I like prom, Sapphire!”

“I’m glad you do…” Under her breath, she quietly added. “At least.”
The next chapter is here. I had fun with this one, it was interesting throwing some new characters in and playing with different outfits for everyone. I hope you enjoy it!

By the way, (Y/SN) stands for "your surname." I wasn't quite sure if there was an official way of abbreviating that...

I still can't tell if the reader is female, male... probably gender neutral...or a tomboy...hmmm
